Adventures of Former Ark dogs... Toby & Hershey

The day began as usual with an early burst of sunshine in the window and mama squealing with her high-pitched voice "Gooooood Mooooorrrrrrnnnnnning!! How's my puppies!?!" Then we get hooked up on those blue restraint devices and head for the outdoors where we happily relieve ourselves.

With the sun in our face, we take a walk around the neighborhood dodging other dog walkers as I myself don't care much for people who aren't "mom or dad." Toby on the other hand could care less who he runs into, he loves everyone... except cable guys... he has a weird thing with them. After our walk, we have a nice, cool and refreshing drink of water and nap for an hour or two.

Mom then takes us for a short afternoon walk when she takes a break during the day from working. She loves walking with us. We love walking too as we get cookies after each one. ;) If the weather is nice and no rain, mom will put us in our outside area. It's pretty nice, but we like hanging with mom best.

Evenings is when all the fun happens.

This week in our walk, we had a little sprinkling of rain and got to see a big beautiful rainbow. It was lovely. We chased a lot of frogs too, but mom won't let us catch a one of them. :P

Why We Asked You to Vote, and Who Really Won

It’s official: the Ark got the most votes in the state of Alabama in the recent Petfinder Shelter Challenge. The high fives and congratulations go out to all of you for a job well done.

But while you all know the Ark helps out cats and dogs in Huntsville and Madison county, I thought I would give you a couple of stories to really drive home why we are so grateful for your support in this and all of our other efforts.
This is Fannie. She is an adorable little gray kitten who seems almost frantic to give you her love and attention. You might wonder how we decided to name her Fannie.

Here’s how:
One morning as the staff was arriving at our vet (the Countryside VeterinaryHospital) one of them heard a pitiful cry from across the road. There in the grass was little Fannie, just a few weeks old. She had crawled up intothe engine in a parked car, and when the car started she must have been caught in the fan belt. She rode all the way up Old Railroad Bed Road, and when the car stopped she dropped out and crawled into the grass. The driver likely never knew she was there. She was rushed in to the clinic and examined. Her chances were grim. She had been nearly skinned by the engine, and while there appeared to be no major internal damage, she was going to need a lot of surgery and post operative care. So the vet picked up the phone and called the Ark. They spoke to Nina Beal(our director), and they told her about the little half skinned kitten.“What do you want us to do?” they asked. Nina didn’t hesitate. “Save her” she said. “It could be expensive” they told her. “Hundreds of dollars”they said. Nina still did not flinch: “Save her if you can.”

So in the weeks between her pain filled arrival at the vet and her recovery(which included a bit of surgery and a lot of TLC from the staff at Countryside) she was given a case number. She didn’t have a name for awhile, so in the space in the paperwork that required a name I just wrote ‘Fan belt Kitty’. She finally made her way to the Ark, with her scars already being hidden by her fur, Nina decided that Fannie would be her name while she was with us.
Fannie went to her forever home a few days ago, and while it is likely she has been given a new name, she’ll always be Fannie to me.

And then, for all of you dog lovers, there’s Gracie. I don’t have a picture of Gracie, but she’s a young, medium sized brown and tan mutt. Gracie was found under a car in a junk yard near Ardmore and taken to our vet.

You can see some miracles and wonders at the Ark, but sometimes you see ugliness as well. Someone had hobbled Gracie. We use the word ‘hobble’ to describe situations where you try to slow down or otherwise impede someone, but the word has a less pleasant meaning, and in Gracie’s case, a much uglier reality. Someone had used a nail or ice pick to puncture the pad on one of Gracie’s rear toes and run a ¼ inch thick cord through the pad to her collar. Not even between the toes, but through the pad.

We’re not sure why anyone would do this, but we had to undo it. We tested Gracie for all of the usual diseases, got her fixed and in general just got her healthy. I’m happy to say Gracie’s adoption was finalized last week.

All of these things cost money, and as you know, the Ark does not receive any city, county, state, or federal funding. So every bit helps, and rest assured the Petfinder grant will go towards helping the next Gracie, Fannie, Fido and Fluffy.

So pat yourselves on the back, take a breather, and get ready. The fall Petfinder Shelter Challenge starts on September 20th.

In the meantime, please stop by the Ark Tuesday through Saturday,11:00-4:00, and you can meet some of these guys yourselves. And remember the Ark motto: “Saving the life of one animal may not change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal.”

3 Weeks and growing....

A special Thank You to our volunteer "kitty mama" who has been caring for 6 three week old kittens. They are a handful of love and joy, but also a lot of work and dedication. Here are some recent pictures that mama provided.

It has to be more than difficult to keep these little mobile babies still long enough to get these cute snapshots.
Their names are only as sample of their cuteness... Vanilla, Val, Victory, Velvet, Valentino, and Vinny. Recently they began wiggling so much that kitty mama said they had figured out how to climb out of their safe place, so it was time to find a new and larger place for them. Keep these little cuties in your thoughts and prayers so that they may be blessed to grow big and strong and adopted by a loving forever family when they are older. :)

Former Ark Dog is a Celebrity!

The Ark received the following message from the Walton family, who adopted a dog from us named "Katie."

"Just wanted to let you know that Katie, whom we adopted from you, has just finished her second year portraying 'Belle' in 'The Miracle Worker' at Ivy Green, in Tuscumbia. She is a natural born actress and very clever, to the point of making her exit right on cue with out any signals from me or her fellow actors. She just knows when to leave! She is a real hit with the audiences, especially the children, and loves the attention she gets backstage from the children in the cast.

She is also enjoying her ordinary, out of the footlights, life at home. We adopted another dog last year and Katie gets a long wonderfully with her. Katie also enjoys ear licks from our cat." ~ Cindy Walton

The Ark Receives $1,000 Grant!

Recently the Ark was awarded a $1,000 grant from Schneider Electric. Employees of Schneider Electric have the opportunity to submit an application to the company foundation, which awards grants to organizations in the community. The Ark was submitted and was chosen to receive a grant from the company.

The 4th of July is a celebration with family, friends, food and fireworks…I can handle the family, friends and most definitely the food however I absolutely don’t like the fireworks…because my mama loves me sooo much, we spent two nights in our bunker…we slept on a cot in the laundry room. I don’t know what I ever did to deserve such love…I know that I am one lucky dog!!

Dear Followers,

Sometimes we get enough space to actually go and rescue an Animal from the Animal Control in Huntsville. They have a very nice staff there and let us have just about every animal we want.
When we picked up one of our former dogs (which got put to the City Shelter instead brought back to us), a nice Animal Control Officer showed us AnnaBell a young great pyrenees.
Her original owner, an older Lady gave her up, because she got to big for her to handle. Now AnnaBell is only about 8 months old but already has a nice size. She does love people.
She also does not have that massive puffy hair like most pyrenees have, but a shorter silkier coat. Much more easy to brush out and wash.

My experience with her is, that she is not hard to handle at all, but she is a great pyrenees and that stands for big dog :)

3 Akita/Labrador puppie Mix

We just got in the cutest little Akita/Labrador puppies, we are happy to say two of them are already gone on to a new home.
The last one, is a female and cute as a button.
She has a little curved tail (but not all the time) and she sleeps in every position imaginable. Funny to watch.

How is works is shelters receive votes on the Animal Rescue site and the shelter with the most votes at the end, receives a grant. Grants are given for most votes overall and for most votes per state. The Ark is currently in 2nd in the state of Alabama.

Arlo, a GREAT dog!

When Arlo came to us some months ago, I thought, what a pretty dog. Now I know, Arlo is not just pretty, sorry, he is saying he is handsome. Arlo also is very smart, affectionate and loves to play.
He does need at least 30 minutes walk/play and snuggle session a day, he insists!
While playing he is pretty gentle and he loves balls, play-rope and should I mention.... yes, at the moment he is not paying attention, he loves to lay in the cool grass under a tree. Sometimes he goofs out, trows himself on his back and you got to get his tummy. Of course being a tough male it will be done with lots of happy play noises and he will act like he does not like it. All you need to know is if you look at his face he got the biggest grin on it.
Arlo even feels good to the touch, what can I say, I am a hands one person. Mr. Handsome will trait one toy for the other and he knows sit and lay down.
He is not a big eater, so he is on the sporty side, I wish he would put on about two more pounds. He prefers to eat with company.
Arlo is very people orientated and his new caretaker will be his world.

This is one great dog!

Hello, My name is Lilee and I wanted to share with you my journey at The Ark. I was rescued by the Ark from a puppy mill a little over a month and a half ago now. When I had my first vet visit, the doctors discovered I was blind and that I had some ear damage from either other doggies chewing my ears or from frost bite. When I arrived at the Ark, the volunteers were so nice to me, giving me lots of treats, love and a wonderful warm place to sleep. I was never hungry and was always loved. Nina, who is the director of the Ark was such a wonderful lady. She really wanted to find out why I couldn't see, so she made me an appointment with Dr. Gibbons, a doggie specialist out of Birmingham. Lucky for us, Dr. Gibbons visits Huntsville twice a month at the Animal Emergency Clinic. Nina told me she would do anything she could if there was any possibility that I could see again. So last week Nina and I ventured down to the Emergency clinic to visit with Dr. Gibbons for my appointment. After Dr. Gibbons examined me, she told us that my blindness was permanent and that nothing could be done to restore it. I had received damage to the optic nerve from a severe head trauma in the past and nothing could be done. Nina and I returned to the Ark where I was greeted by the loving volunteers that pet, brush, and take care of me. Everyone at the shelter told me that there was a special home for me and one day I would find it and you know what, they were right.

On Saturday, I had a family come and visit me. They brought a sweet doggie with them and we played and loved on each other. I am a lover dog, so can't help but love everyone. ;) Apparently the family fell in love with me and told me they were going to adopt me and take me home. I was really excited. I also found out that they had 2 other doggies at home. One of the doggies is deaf, but that is ok, because I'm not deaf and now I can be that doggies ears and that doggie can be my eyes! Thank you to all the wonderful people at the Ark for helping me find my loving home. I will never forget your kindness. ~Lilee

An other Puppy Mill....

as you may have seen on TV or read in the Newspaper, the Ark rescued about 35 dogs from a private Puppy Mill.
Already running on high capacity, we had to go and buy 4 new pens to accommodate the new dogs.

We have the cutest Rat Terriers, also some small Jack Russel's and some Silkie's, which look like Yorkie's, just bigger (about 13 pounds).

Many of the dogs have Heartworms and just about all are on ear medication.
They usually get along with other dogs, because they where all together held in one basement room. They are shy, since they have not been socialized and will have to be house trained.

One of the female Rat Terrier is totally blind and will need an understanding, very caring home.

Please, if you are thinking of a new small family member, have a look at our so many small dogs. They are very cute.

today I was writing about Radar to you all and the very same day, his original caretaker typed in to petfinder.com "Jack Russel" and got lucky.

Since we receive no money from the state or county, and run on donations alone, I would like to thank with all my heart all the nice people who make it possible to rescue so many animals.

To all the people who would like to adopt a feline or canine from us, our adoption fee is only $150 per animal, no matter what we had to do to it to nurse it back to health. All our animals are vaccinated and neutered or spayed.

Also a little reminder. Make sure your pet has identification on his collar as in Rabbis Tag. Remember, even if you find your pet again, legally after 10 day's it is no longer your animal, but the animal goes over to the new caretaker.

"Radar"

He is an adorable little Jack Russel Terrier.
Oh no, don't even think it, he is not one of the hyper Jack Russel and his fur is soft and not coarse.
Radar has only two passions in live and that is wanting to be loved.

Radar was found as a stray, but someone must have loved him. Maybe he chased a cat and got lost.
That would be his second passion, he absolutely does not like cats.

Radar may have a run-in with a car, because one canine tooth is missing and he had a blind eye.
Had a blind eye is, because our Vet. told us that Radar would be more healthy in the future if we remove the eye.
White blind eyes shrink and germs get in to the eye sucked and will cause infections.
So no bigey, we had the eye removed and he is not even wearing and eye patch :)

Radar was adopted 2 x but was very unlucky. The first man was nice and loved him, but in the end of the month needed his adoption fee back. We fully understand, that some people have problems and have no choice in it.
The economy is bad after all.
The second time, there was a very nice lady who fell in love with Radar instantly, but when she brought Radar home, her two dogs would try to hurt poor Radar and it just did not work out.
So if you look for a loving and very special dog, who can say he has a one eyed dog with a tooth missing.

Come and see Radar, even if you just give him a test walk, he will love you!

March is a very special month for me…

March 2004…Corky crossed the Rainbow Bridge…now he was the sweetest Corgi ever, adopted from a local shelter I could see by Corky’s scars and actions that he had lived on the streets. All he wanted was a loving home. Corky was king of our home for nine years. Rest in peace my sweet boy.

March 2006…Bilbo roared into my life…adopted from The ARK, at an age of 11 months Bilbo showed me that I could laugh and love again. He is a typical herding dog, headstrong and stubborn (kinda like me). Bilbo likes to be in charge and will listen to me if there are “cookies” involved.

All animal lovers know what I am talking about…sad to say goodbye to our babies but happy to cherish the good memories.

Ark's 20th Birthday

Bow Wow "Bone"-anza

Yesterday the Ark was involved with the Bow Wow "Bone"-anza (held at the Huntsville Botanical Garden), an annual event that offers many pet demonstrations, agencies, vendors and etc. There was even some "pup"-supials.

It was a great day to appreciate our four legged furry friends. It was very chilly outside, but many folks braved the cold to come out for the doggie wedding as well as to get their pets microchipped at a discounted rate.

We visited with many members of our wonderful and supportive community. Thank you so much for coming out to visit us. :)

I would like to introduce you to Starr,

as you can see she is a pretty dog. Unfortunately she does not show well behind bars and potential caretakers bypass her every time.
Starr has found the Ark on her own and she brought her puppies with her. She was all skinny and worn out because she gave all she had to her young.
Her offspring got adopted and she is still at the Ark, not that we mind, we all lover her.

Last summer she was the last to be out in the play yard goofing off. When I checked on her to bring her in for the day, she run for me and poked my hand and ran back, where she licking the floor.
She repeated it 3 times, so I went and checked what she wanted.
On the ground there where 2 naked baby birds who had fallen out of the nest. She licked them to keep them warm and she supervised us as we put them back in to the nest.

I let you in on a little secret, Starr loves big male dogs, she absolutely did fall in love with a German Shepard "Zeus", who already went on to a new good home.
She also loves to play and run free (play yard) when she gets a chance.

In 1995 my dog Corky and I met Nina and her dog Monkey at an ARK information booth at the Kmart in Madison. My first impression of Nina was “now here is a woman who is passionate about saving animals” …we started volunteering, me at information booths and Corky with humane education. The ARK celebrates 20 years of helping needy animals…all possible because of Nina, her wonderful volunteers, the generosity of local veterinarians and the enormous support of the community. And like Nina always says…”The animals Thank You most of all”.

Little update on Rufus the older, a little over weight dog.
His new Daddy is Scott, one of the Ark Volunteer.

What I did not mention, I also fostered for some time, little Clementine, a sassy kitten who also got adopted by an Volunteer.

Her name is now Zena, because she has it in for one of her Italian Greyhounds.
Zena aka Clementina now waylays the dog and has been know to jump on his back.

Ark's Pennies for Paws Kick-off Event 1/15-1/16

On Saturday I had the pleasure of representing the Ark at the first Pennies for Paws Kick-off event. The day began with us setting up our booth in Parkway Place Mall.

This event was a fundraiser to collect pennies for our animals. As many of you know we are a no-kill shelter and we make sure all animals at our shelter has their shots, is spayed/neutered, and is up to date on their monthly heartworm preventative and frontline protection.

These services don't come cheap and without city, county, state or federal funding, we rely on our very gracious community to help keep the Ark afloat.

This will be an ongoing event for the entire year. We have asked folks in our community to remember the Ark by saving their pennies for us. Many folks came by the booth during the kick-off and dropped lots of pennies for our animals. Even some precious children graciously donated their savings and allowances as well as started collections at their local school to help the Ark animals.

The Ark is blessed to have so many wonderful and supportive people in our community. No donation is too small to the animals at the Ark!

A big "Thank You" from all of the Ark animals and volunteers to all of you that came by and supported us by donating. Also a special "Thank You" to those who have decided to continue collecting at their work and businesses all year. We are so grateful to all of you!

This is a first for us…so here goes…I refer to this opportunity as BB (Bilbo’s Blog). I adopted Bilbo from The ARK in 2006. It had been two years since my first Corgi, Corky had crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The ride home from The ARK with Bilbo was our first adventure. It is a wonder we didn’t run off the road, Bilbo was not used to riding in a car, imagine trying to steer, shift and hang on to a very excited young (11 months old) dog!! Oh I can laugh about it now…

The Adventures of Radius!

Hi, My name is Radius and I'm a former Ark cat. I was rescued from the Huntsville Animal Control by a sweet Lady named Nina. She ran this place called the Ark. I had heard good things about this mysterious place, but had no idea what it was till I got there.

I immediately was rushed from the Animal Control to the Ark's vet (I honestly didn't like that part, but... you know how it goes). After I got my wellness exam and was neutered, I was taken to the Ark. I got my own private room for a while filled with toys, my personal kitty throne and tall trees to climb. I got to see lots of people every day that would come in and give me massages and brush my fur. It was great. They even played with me!! A dream come true. Then, I got to ride on this cart every morning throughout the shelter to greet all the dogs in the shelter. It was a lot of fun, plus I liked the kitty treats too. ;)

But best of all... there was this one guy that came in every Friday and sat with me. He held me on his chest and just snuggled and loved on me. After a good month of this, he decided to take me home with him and boy... I love it! It is even better than the Ark. I sleep on a huge, comfy bed. I get to bird watch whenever I like and have the best meals.

I even got a brother named Andy. We get into a lot of mischief together. ;)

Christmas Open House December 5th!

Ever wondered what a no-kill animal shelter looks like? Why not come out and take a tour of the Ark while mingling with volunteers and the 4-legged furry friends?

On Saturday, December 5th from 11am -4pm the Ark will hold a Christmas Open House. We invite everyone in the community to drop by the shelter and take a tour, enjoy some refreshments and love on some fuzzy critters.

It will be a fun day for the Ark volunteers and animals. :) We look forward to seeing you all!

ROCKY the boxer,

after struggling with a mild case of heart worms, from which he fully recovered. A fresh neutering after being diagnosed healthy, poor Rocky fell ill. He ate like a horse, but his weight dropped dangerously. So we rushed him to our Vet and after extensive testing they put him on high powered antibiotics.

While delivering one of our new puppies for a checkup an immunization to the Vet, I had a short visit with Rocky.
He defiantly is doing very well, still a bit on the slim site, he is picking up weight fast.

It is no secret, that Rocky is one of my favorite dogs, even do I love all the about 25 dogs which are currently housed at the Ark.
Of course unlike lots of peeps I love the fully grown dogs and as bigger as better.

Rocky usually likes all dogs and walks right on my heel. I wish for him a home where he can be a family member and not being just dumped all day in the yard.
He is a lover and softy.

Here are a few facts about the boxer breed.

OK, OK, I know, I am the dog lady but..........

that does not mean that I hate cats.

Recently I took two little kittens home with me to bottle raise. They are the cutest kittens ever.
But like all mom's I may be a bit judgmental.

Come to the shelter and meat Hugo (I call him L'l red). He is a very snugly kitten, purrs like a well tuned motor and will love you for sure.
He is a skinny male kitten, only a few weeks old, high legged and his fur is red and short.

The other kitten is named Quenny, me and my husband had the honor of giving her the name which we did so in remembrance of one of our cats which got to be 22 years old and looked a lot like her.
She is a typical girl and knows that she is a beauty. She has half long hair, looks like a little fluff ball.

The Ark's dinner at The Ledges Oct. 15th!

Last night was the annual dinner fundraiser for the Ark where all of the Ark's volunteers and supporters gather in their best duds to celebrate the Ark and it's achievements. Last night's dinner was held at The Ledges golf clubhouse in Huntsville. http://www.theledges.com

The facility there is just beautiful!

The evening began with Nina giving thanks and praise to all those that help support the Ark whether it be physically, emotionally or financially. Without all the hands and hearts involved, the Ark couldn't operate.

The Ark held a silent auction (with all proceeds going to the Ark) at the dinner that consisted of various items including handmade quilts, pet statues, framed art and beautiful jewelry.

There was an incredible Frank Sinatra singer. He was so good that I thought it was a CD playing until Nina introduced him as the entertainer for the night.

Dinner this year was buffet style, with formal place settings. Items on the menu were, sliced beef and pork, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, dinner rolls and a scrumptious dessert of either apple crisp or bread pudding.

Both the beef and pork were so tender and cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes were melt in your mouth and reminded me of some of granny's good potatoes. The green beans were steamed to the perfect consistency and lightly seasoned with an onion salt. And of course, the rolls were moist and had a nice crisp exterior.

After eating a luscious meal, we enjoyed a superb dessert. I was particularly partial to the Apple crisp. The apples were so sweet and the sauce was a fruity dream topped with a crunchy brown sugar granola. It was a lovely dessert.

The auctions were a success and raised some much needed funds for the Ark animals.

We were very blessed with good food and great company. Another successful Ark event!

Update on the 3 Puppy Mill dogs

Friday the Papillon Mix is doing lot's better. We discovered that he will go out for a walk with Nina's big white great Pyrenees. He just loves her.

The two Shi Zhu's are also doing great. They love to play together and Frisbee the male, forgets all about his hip surgery, when he plays with female counterpart FiFi.

Little update on the Puppy mill dogs

We had good luck with adopting the little sweethearts out to good homes.
Currently we have still 3 of them in our care, two of them just came in from our Vet this evening, they are two Shih Tzu doggies (Names = FiFi and Frisbee).
Very cute, and loving, but still a little on the beat up side. Both of them will look very pretty when a little papered. Shih Tzu? The Shih Tzu is a dog breed which originated in China. The Shih Tzu is reported to be the oldest and smallest of the Tibetan holy dogs, its vaguely lion-like look being associated with the Tibetan Snow Lion and Chinese guardian lions hence is also called the Chinese or Tibetan Lion Dog.

The last dog is a black and white Papillion Mix (Name = Friday).
He is currently very shy and will need some time to come out of his shell. Definitive not a dog for kids at the moment.
The Papillion (French for "butterfly") is a small, friendly, elegant breed of dog of the Spaniel type, distinguished from other breeds by its large butterfly-like ears. The Papillion is one of the oldest of the toy Spaniels.

We still need to take Fifi's and Frisbee's pictures, but below you can see Friday.

Notes from the Catman: Sabrina - Chapter 4: Your Turn + Saturday update

Well, another Saturday passed, and Sabrina is still at the Ark. That's OK for now: we'll find her a home soon and as long as she's there I won't miss her.

But Chapter 4 in her life is up to someone else. We've helped as much as we can, now we have to wait. Sabrina has used up one or two (maybe three or four!) of her nine lives, but I'm pretty sure her future is bright. Someone out there needs a friend like her. And when the find each other, Sabrina and her person will live happily ever after.

Saturday news - Wee Willie was adopted, and so was Laser (not pictured) and Zeno.

We had a kitty come back. Her name is Phoebe (below), and she was in sad shape. It will be a while before we get her back to 100%, but when we do she'll forget her bad experience and be a great addition to someone's house. I'll talk more about her and something called flea bite dermatitis in the coming days.

Notes from the Catman: Sabrina - Chapter 3: Getting to Know Her + Saturday update

Sabrina - Chapter 3: Getting to Know Her

Sabrina has had a hard life. She won't tell us too much, so we have to make educated guesses. We know she wasn't taken care of as a kitten since she wasn't spayed or vaccinated. She may have been a stray or a barn cat, or maybe even a little bit feral. Other cats stress her out so much it takes a toll on her health. But I can tell you she absolutely loves to be held or to sit in your lap. In fact, she loves it so much she can be a little testy when you put her down.

I think that in time, with the right person she knows she can trust, the testy parts will fade. But for now, she should be handled by people with some experience with cats.

By now you should realize that Sabrina is one of my favorites. She's a fiery little girl who's perseverance and intensity has truly impressed me. She's not for just anyone, but somewhere there is a human who needs rescuing. And Sabrina is just the one for the job.

Quick notes on the cat news: April got adopted! Apparently, someone saw her on the telethon and drove two hours to meet her. April can be pretty high strung, but it sounds like there was a lot of mutual attraction and off she went to live in Tennessee.

First thing on Saturday little Vinny went home. His world just got a lot bigger!

And on Saturday, shelter favorite Julep found her family. We'll all miss her as she was 10 pounds of purrsonality in a one pound kitten.

From the Catman: Sabrina - Chapter 2: The Kittens

As I mentioned before, Sabrina had five little kittens. They were only a few days old, and were just beginning to open their eyes when we decided Sabrina was really sick and we rushed them all to the emergency vet. Two of them were just too weak and sick, and they didn't make it. But three did make it, and we soon had them and Sabrina on their way to recovery.

When we get a litter of kittens, Nina names all of them with names beginning with the same letter, so here's Paddy, Panda, and Pogo:

Pogo and Panda have gone to their forever homes, but Paddy is still at the Ark.

Paddy was on TV last weekend for the telethon, and he did great. He didn't squirm or try to get way. I think he even smiled at the camera once!

In my last post I said we were calling Sabrina a Manx cat. That means she doesn't have a tail. (You can see that in her video here.) We know she didn't just lose her tail since none of her kittens had tails! Paddy's tail is about two inches long, but he doesn't need any more than that.

A cute characteristic of Manx kitties is that when they get excited they tend to hop just a little. If he's not been adopted by Saturday I'll try to get him to run around and make a video so you can see. In the meantime, here's Paddy's petfinder page.

The day after....

Many of you watched our Telethon fundraiser and I would like to thank you all for your donations and pledges. For me it was a first, and it was very exciting and scary as well, when Nina ask me to come on to the set and be interview on behalf of the Ark and Annie (the little Poodle Mix).
It is kind of funny when ask a question, many answers rush to ones brain and the mouth comes out with something totally different as what you planed to say. But I sure hope I got to the point somehow.

Also I had a great experience talking to so many nice pet owners while taking care of my assigned dog.
Like I had a choice not to make contact, since Rocky our boxer insisted on meeting all our two and four legged friends and supporters. Rocky is one of the most social dogs I have ever met. He also walks great on the lead and bonds very quickly. I sure envy his future owner. Currently he is on heart worm medicine for a few more weeks, and after that he will have to go back to the Vet office to loose his manly parts.

You also got to meet Rufus or as I call him Rufi, he was the older dog, who is also featured further down on this blog.
Duke the Basset hound went with his new caretakers and has a basset lady of his own since yesterday.
Blue Boy the little puppy with the blue eyes is a bright little critter and will grow up to a great big dog when trained properly. He has a gently playful disposition. So he will be easy to train.
Dilly was the playful dog running around in the Video from our shelter.
Annie, the small Poodle/Dachshund mix is very gentle and loves to cuddle. She really would like a new caretaker for herself, right after she was checked out by our vets. We took her in on Saturday evening and even do she looks healthy and nice, we always send every pet to the Vet to make sure they are healthy before adopted out.
The Ark does not believe in hiding anything about your new pet. We will always tell you everything about the pet you are interested in, may it be health or behavior problems.

Whew! It's been a long weekend, but it's a good kind of tired. The telethon is over and we broke the record with over $33,000. Thanks to everyone who contributed or helped, but from me a special shout out to the the cats we had on set. They behaved and performed beautifully! Laser, Loki, Pepe, Julep, Paddy, Victor, Victoria, Vinnie, Vincent, and Vinton. And finally: Sparky you're a star!

Saturday was hectic getting ready for the telethon, but we also adopted Turbo, Tara and Lily. And Tabitha went home Tuesday. Good luck guy and gals!

Needy Paws Telethon Results!!

As all of you know today was our annual "Needy Paws Telethon," and it was sure a successful day!

Some of you may not know it, but the Ark receives NO city, county, state or federal funding. The Ark solely relies on donations from our generous community to keep afloat. The Ark has no paid employees, and is run by volunteers only and without those hands every day, the animals wouldn't be tended to, but as everyone knows, there are financials that go with the responsibility of rescuing animals and that is where fundraising comes in.

Since the Ark gets all of their animals prime vet care, including all shots and spaying/neutering, it can be a large expense. Many animals come to the Ark with various health issues from skin conditions to heart worm infestations, but we see to it that they all get excellent care and are treated for all health issues. In order to raise funds for animal care and shelter operation, we have many fundraisers including the Needy Paws Telethon. It is one of our major fundraising events of the year.

As a volunteer in the phone room this year, I can tell you that the day was very busy with very generous folks that called in to support the Ark. We got to talk to many wonderful people that told us stories about their beloved pets, including the pea-eating poodles that got in trouble for eating peas out of the garden this week. Hehehe...

After 4 long hours of answering phones, we finally got to hear a grand total for pledges....

The day ended with over $33,000.00 in pledges!! We are so grateful for the support from the community and for all the folks that called in to donate their time to volunteer. We definitely need all the hands that we can get.

Now we hope and pray that each of those wonderful people that pledged will remember to mail in the donation. :)

At one point I received a donation of $500.00 and it was incredible. Folks are so generous and have blessed the shelter with so much with their donations and most of all support. Without our community, we would not be able to operate. Thank you so much to all of the volunteers that helped today and all of the citizens of the community that donated to this wonderful cause.

Want to be a Volunteer?

We at the Ark are always in need of responsible and longtime Volunteers, both for the early morning crew and the day time crew.
You should be at least 16 years of age and willing and able to follow instructions.

What is a Volunteer?
Volunteering is the practice of people working on behalf of others without being motivated by financial or material gain. Volunteering generally considered an altruistic (Selfless) activity, intended to promote good or improved quality of life. People also volunteer to gain skills without requiring an employer's financial investment.

What will be your benefits?
You will be meting people with the same interest. Teens will learn to take responsibility and care for an other live. If you want to work with the dogs, you will for sure get a good workout, since we walk ALL of our dogs at least ones a day. Okay, okay, it is lots of fun to for us animal lovers, and the animals.

What does a volunteer do?
Well, it depends...

...if you are working with the dogs,
* you will be walking the dogs
* scoop poop in the confinements and on your walks
* make sure the dogs have plenty clean water all day long
* give them a bath if needed
* report if you see anything wrong like a limp or a small cut
* play and snuggle with them to make sure they feel loved

...if you are working with the cats, you will be
* snuggle and socialize the cats
* groom them
* make sure they have plenty of water and food
* scoop the litter boxes
* sweep the rooms to keep them clean
* help people with the selection of a cat
* report if you see anything wrong like a limp, sneeze or a small cut

There is much more you will do, but this will give you a quick idea what you will get in to.

If you want to work with cats, your volunteer coordinator will the Randy the catman,
If you rather want to work with dogs, your volunteer coordinator will be Heike, that is me.

Oh yes, make sure you will wear sensible cloth. If you want to work with the dogs, wear closed shoes (no flip flops).

So if I did not scare you away with the promise of lots of work and fun, please come to our office and fill out one of our Volunteer forms and I will not be shy to put you to work shamelessly.

Today I want to tell you about "Odie"

Odie is a very sweet dog. He likes to move and also attention from people.
The little rascal loves to play catch and is trying to snuggle.
Trying to snuggle in his case means, he never did learn to, so he comes, presses his little head on you, gets some strokes and with all that attention and excitement, he has to run a few rounds before he comes back for more.
I am sure if he would have a steady home and someone to show him what proper snuggles and love are he would come and ask for more of it.
The key to Odies heart is a gentle steady demeanor and bit of patients.
The reward counts double as high when he trusts you and comes on his own for some snuggles.
So if you are interested in helping Odie, please ask a volunteer to bring him out of his confinement, because he does not show well (like most of the dogs) when in his pen.
Walk him around the block yourself and see if you like him.

Catman says "Meet Sabrina!" Chapter 1

I'll talk about a number of things here, but tonight I want you to meet Sabrina. Here she is:

Sabrina is a small tuxedo patterned Manx kitty. That means she was born without a full tail. (There are a few breeds without tails, but the most popular is called Manx. She's not a pure bred Manx, but we'll call her a one just for fun.)

She came to us with 5 little babies. They were just a few days old, and she tried hard to raise the little ones. But after a short time, we realized she was sick, so we took her and her babies to the emergency vet.

Sabrina had calici. This is a virus also known as cat flu, and like human flu it can range from annoying to deadly. Sabrina's case was close to fatal for her, and sadly, two of her little ones didn't make it.

(Calici is easily prevented and is part of the shot series every kitten gets when they go to the vet for the first time. Sabrina was not that fortunate, so she got sick.)

Sabrina is now fine, and she's still looking for her home. Tomorrow I'll tell you a little about her kittens and her personality. But for now I'll leave you with a link to her video.

The Ark and ARF do Puppy Mill Rescue

As seen on Chanel 31 waaytc.com, the Ark and ARF rescued the left behind (18) older and some sick breeding dogs from a Pappy Mill, which where scheduled to be put down.
From original 217 dogs, this where the left behind ones no one wanted, because of health problems starting from cataract to pneumonia. As soon the dogs will return from our Vet, they will be as good as new and put up for adoption in loving homes.

We firmly believe that something what can be cured or old age, is no reason to put down any animal. Thanks to donations, we are in a position to help the little critters.

My name is Heike and I will be helping you with your dog related questions at the Ark.

Today I would like to bring Mr. Rufus to your attention. Rufus is an older dog and we all love him.
Rufus has a big heart and would make a great companion dog. He likes to go for a walk, but it does not have to be the biggest one.
Since Rufus is not with me right now, it won't hurt his feelings when I say he has a bit of a weight problem.
We put him on diet food and it looks like it is starting to show.
So if you got a place for Mr. Rufus, come and see him, find out if you like him, take him out for a spin, he will love the walk.

The ARK also has a Pet Therapy and Pet Education program we do in the Huntsville area. Contact the ARK for information or to schedule a session at your nursing home or school.
